What is Toner Mask?

In simple terms, just pour the toner onto a cotton pad and place the moistened cotton pad on your face. Immediately after application, your face will feel hydrated or your skin will be brightened. The effects will vary according to the features of the toner. A short term solution to skin problems or to soften exfoliation and help absorption of subsequent care.

This article provides the top 7 tips you need to know before you start to have toner masks.

TIP 1: Wash your face first

If the face is not cleaned at all, the oil and keratin on the face will affect the absorption. It is better to wash the face or wipe it with a cotton pad to help the keratin to metabolise before applying toner masks.

TIP 2: Carefully select cotton pads

The concept of toner mask is similar to that of a mask, but face mask contains a much higher concentration of serum than a wet application. Most people choose to dab the toner onto a cotton pad before applying it to their face. This is where the combination of cotton pads and the amount of toner used is very critical.

Although pure cotton pads are softer, they are more absorbent and more likely to flake, which makes them more wasteful. Non-woven pads are the lightest and most suitable for toner mask, but avoid using them to wipe the skin.

TIP 3: Sufficient amount of toner

Sometimes it can be counterproductive to use a little bit of the more costly toners because you are worried about the usage. The purpose of a toner mask is to allow the skin to absorb the toner and rehydrate. It is suggested to moisten the entire cotton pad to the point where it will not drip.

If you use so little amount of toner that the cotton pad dries up instantly, it will take away the hydration from the skin thus reversing the purpose of the toner masks!

TIP 4: Pick the right toner for the toner mask

You cannot just grab a toner and use it as toner mask. A natural, non-additive, fragrance-free toner is the most appropriate. NUWers’ favourite toners are described later in this article. Most importantly, you should avoid using whitening, exfoliating, cleansing and harsh toners such as fruit acids to prevent allergies and redness.

Many toners contain alcohol, but it is not ideal for prolonged contact with the skin. Alcohol helps the product to volatilise more, resulting in faster volatilisation of alcohol and water when applied on the face.

TIP 5: Top 3 face areas to apply

It is suggested that you apply moistened cotton pads to the three main areas of the face: forehead, cheeks and chin. Avoid the delicate and sensitive areas around the eyes and lips. Make sure the cotton pads are firmly attached to the skin and that the edges of the nose and forehead are in good shape.

TIP 6: Leave on face for too long

In the same way as with the face mask, never let a cotton pad dry out before removing it. As the skin is separated from the outside world, the skin’s temperature will rise and the pores will open, a dry cotton pad will draw moisture out of the skin. The more you apply it, the drier it becomes.

Toner mask should be applied for about five minutes and should never be left on overnight.

TIP 7: Too frequent to apply it

Remember not to apply toner mask every day. Once or twice a week is sufficient. We would suggest using a toner mask for five minutes before putting on make-up as a first aid, rather than as a routine.
