In the previous two articles, we have shared with you the value of moisturisation and the type of emulsion that is ideal for each skin type. So how do you use moisturisers correctly to achieve enviable skin? Here are 10 superb tips for moisturisers, and NUWer’s favorite products.
TIP 1: The best time for use
After showering or washing your face, you want to lock the hydration in your skin. However, if your skin gets too wet, the cream will slip off. Make sure you use your moisturiser after you leave the bath or shower if you only use it once a day. Apply the moisturiser while the skin is still slightly wet. This will help your skin retain extra hydration, especially if your moisturiser contains occlusive agent. Should you have more time to take care of your skin, please consider wearing a moisturiser before going to bed. You will definitely feel the hydration of your skin when you wake up in the morning.
It’s also a brilliant suggestion to take a small bottle of moisturiser with you. Your skin will always be looking great and stable throughout the day. If your epidermis is properly hydrated, you don’t have to worry about dry skin.

Antioxidant-rich acai, goji berry extracts, and carrot seed oil are known to fight free radicals and environmental stressors while also assisting in minimizing the appearance of fine lines.
TIP 2: Exfoliate properly
At our young age, the stratum corneum is automatically renewed every fortnight. However, as we get older, this process decreases and the dead skin cells tend to stay in place for longer. For dry skin, this problem is further aggravated because the dead skin cells continue to accumulate.
You are essentially tearing off the cuticle when you exfoliate. Yet, dryness goes deeper than the surface of the skin and even if you use an exfoliator with skin moisturising benefits, your dry skin problem will not be solved immediately. Exfoliation followed by a moisturiser will absolutely give your skin a real hydrating effect.
TIP 3: Sequence of skincare products
When you combine products together in the most effective order, you can get more functional benefits from your skincare products. The rule of thumb is to start with the thinnest consistency and work your way up to the heaviest products. First comes the serum, then the oil, then the moisturisers.
An exception is sunscreen, which should be applied last. It is not advisable to put SPF below a lotion or cream, because SPF products intrinsically block absorption into the skin.

TIP 4 : Application sequence
The order of application should be followed wherever it is driest. If no eye cream is in use, start by applying around the eyes, followed by the cheeks, sides of the mouth and upper and lower jaw. After applying to these areas, then to the whole face, so that the dry areas are doubly moisturised.
TIP 5: Your neck is the second face
When you use an anti-ageing facial moisturiser, there’s no reason to stop when you reach your chin. It is advisable to use the same product on your neck, chest and hands, as all these areas show signs of ageing. While facial skincare targets wrinkles and dark spots, your regular body lotion does not.

TIP 6: Upward movement of the cream
Over the years, gravity pulls the skin downwards, which causes sagging and wrinkles. To solve this problem, some skincare experts suggest applying moisturisers upwards. The effect of reversing gravity may not be sufficient, but it will not make the situation significantly worse. The gentle massage technique improves circulation, which helps reduce puffiness and ensures that your skin absorbs as much moisturiser as possible.
TIP 7: Natural products and sensitive skin
Most people think that natural or organic means a better product to use for moisturising dry skin. The fact is that people with sensitive skin often find mass produced, chemical-laden skincare products to be more effective and less stimulating.
The natural skin moisturising options often include perishable foods and plants, which have a limited expiration date and can cause allergic reactions. Many of these products can appear harsher on the skin than other chemical alternatives and can make the existing problem of dryness worse.
If you have sensitive skin and want to use an all-natural skin moisturiser to combat dryness, try looking for a product that professes to be mild. If you have any allergies, make sure you check the list of ingredients before applying them to your skin. If you prefer to follow the chemical route, try to familiarise yourself with the components to look out for.

TIP 8: Use more moisturisers if your skin is especially stressed
Normally, the amount of emulsion to be used is not more than the amount of toner, about the size of a coin. However, if your skin feels very tired as well as dull, it needs more hydration and nutrients, so increase the amount of lotion you use. Give your skin a little more coverage by using two to three coin-sized amounts.
TIP 9: Essential oils are a supercharged bonus for beautiful skin
Anti-ageing extracts such as rose, rosemary and geranium work wonders when massaged into dry skin. Mint helps to increase the production of sebum; wax chrysanthemum relieves irritation and inflammation caused by dryness.
TIP 10: Age does have an impact
Women in their 20s are more able to keep their skin moisturised, so it is recommended to choose a moisturiser with less oil content. As you age into your 30s, your skin becomes more vulnerable to drier skin and skin problems increase. It is important to use a slightly more oily products. After the age of 40, the dryness of the skin becomes more severe. For this reason it is useful to use a lotion with a larger oil content.
On the other hand, after menopause, the production of the female hormone oestrogen begins to decrease. Typically, women’s skin has a higher sebum content than men’s. There have been cases, for example, during menopause, when women’s hormone production is reduced, where the oily condition of the face becomes worse. If you are troubled by severe skin problems due to menopausal disorders, you should consult a dermatologist or an obstetrician.
